Would you be upset if someone gave you an aquamarine engagement ring?
A friend got an aquamarine engagement ring (and no, it's not even her birthstone) and the guy *said* he paid $1500 for it. I don't believe him. You can't spend that much on not a diamond engagement ring. Would you be pissed?
I wouldn't be upset. Especially if it was my favorite gemstone, it reminded him of my eyes or any other sentimental reasons. Even if it didn't, it's the thought that counts and knowing he loves me enough to want to spend the rest of his life with me...well, how can you be mad?
With all due respect, I think society as a whole has women tripping too heavy off of material things that don't really matter at the end of the day. Money, nor diamonds won't keep you happy if your man is a sleaze.
