Is there a difference detween the carat weight of a diamond and the carat weight of a gemstone?

I bought an aquamarine gemstone 2.5 ct. and it is much smaller than my 2.5 ct diamond, but it is the same cut.

I think the issue is that you are looking at the SIZE of the stone, whereas the carats describe the WEIGHT. The carat is a unit of mass and it does not change from one gemstone to the next. Your diamond is made almost entirely of carbon, which is a very light element. In contrast, your aquamarine contains aluminum, silicon and oxygen, which are all heavier elements than carbon. So the aquamarine is smaller because it is a denser mineral, and the same mass is able to fit into a smaller volume. But both stones are still 2.5 carats. Hope this helps!
