Earrings Genuine
Don't just assume that the diamond jewelry you have inherited or been given by a loved one is real; if you have any doubts, you should get a jeweler to look at it, because there are some good fakes out there that the average person would be taken by. If you really want to know whether you have a genuine diamond or not, you'll want to have it examined by someone who's qualified to certify such things. Chances of you being misled if you decide to check yourself are high. There are ways and methods by which you can discover whether the diamond you have is genuine or counterfeit.
Certified appraisal. While the jeweler that you purchase your stone from is likely qualified for appraisals, it's wise to have an independent source make an appraisal for you as well. You can find capable and certified appraisers in your telephone book or online. You should ask some basic questions over the phone or in person at their place of business. Find out the time taken to complete the process, and whether they carry it out in your presence or elsewhere. They must include the fees for their appraisal. Generally, the evaluator ought to be able to do it in your presence, so avoid appraisers who say they need to do the evaluation when you are not there, or at other premises.
A diamond tester can be used. An electronic diamond tester can tell the difference between authentic diamonds and well-made facsimiles. This part of the certification does not have a 100 percent accuracy rate because Moissanite and other stones can create a false-positive with the test and tester, and appear to be diamonds. So, your diamond should undergo many tests, not just using a tester.
Look for lucidity. A diamond does not let light to pass through because it refracts light away from it. A perfect diamond is not completely transparent. Try to read some newsprint through the stone - if light passes through the gem you are interested in purchasing and you are able to read the print, then the gem is not a diamond.
Checking with a black light. A black light provides ultra-violet radiance. When looking at a diamond under a black light, the differences can be noted as this: various blue hues denote a true diamond, cubic zirconium, which is often substituted for a diamond, has yellow hues, and glass will not show color. Consequently, you can divide the genuine stones from the fakes.
Test of cutting ability. Something that is used commercially for cutting materials, as it is a very hard substance is a diamond. Actually, diamond cutting tools are most often employed on glass! If you'd like to verify it on your own, try cutting a piece of glass with the stone you think is a diamond. One of the ways that a person can tell if a diamond is genuine is to test it against a piece of glass; as the hardest substance on earth, the diamond should leave a scratch mark on the glass. But, good quality cubic zirconium gems will scratch glass as well, making this test less than an absolute guarantee.
Examination of the four Cs. This method is a sure fire way of determining whether your diamond is real or fake. The four Cs talk about - color, carat, cut and clarity. The color of a diamond is established with a standard grading system. The grading system uses alphabet letters ranging from the letter "D" to the letter "Z" to categorize a diamond's color. Prices are fixed according to the grading of stones but the most expensive stones are graded between D-J. Other diamonds are graded from K-Z and come in various shades and colors, including dark brown and gray.
Carat - is an element used to compute the mass or weight of valuable and semi-precious stone. The higher the carat, the extra luxurious the diamond will be.
Cut - There are many different categories of stone cut, which are graded by class in a system similar to that used for color. The different cuts in which a diamond may be wrought are - brilliant, step and mixed.
Crisp, clean, cuts are also more costly. The ideal cuts are between 53%-64% of the stone's girth. The depth of the cut is ideally 58%-64% of the girth. Genuine diamonds have certificates verifying the cut, issued by qualified institutions and appraisers.
The number and placement of internal flaws in a diamond is referred to as Clarity. Transparency is rated under a variety of categories - I1-I3, SI1-SI2, VS1-VS2 and VVS1-VVS2 - the final categories are set aside for atypical diamonds which have no or approximately no flaws. The previous 2 categories refer to those stones which have unstable degrees of flaws when seen under intensification and the prices may fluctuate based on the figure and occurrence of flaws.
With all of these tips, you won't be fooled by a fake diamond. However, it is always a great idea to get a jeweler or professional evaluator to check the stone. Remember to look for the certificate of quality which will accompany a genuine diamond.
