I’ve been at the bench for 32 years. My old boss used to say “It’s a hard way to make an easy living.” My wife is a goldsmith too, she spent a fortune learning at the Revere Acad in San Fran. They told her she would make big bux, liars! She still wasn’t ready for the real jewelry world either. The truth about the jewelry business is it’s hard to learn, and the pay and working conditions are terrible cuz there’s no union. My advice: It’s a great hobby but stay in school.

I grew up in the jewelry business and started in the trades around age 13. I liked the work, and still dabble in it from time to time. However, I’m glad I listened to my Dad, who owned the store where I worked, and went back to college. Being on the bench is a hard way to make a living. No one realizes the amount of skill required to be any good, and no one cares. It’s sad because it’s a great trade.

an exellent thought )) being a Master jeweller for 19 years , I really considering to change my occupation ……no appreciation or gratitude at all ….not talking about respect ) Pay was not bad was taking home around $1200 weekly , after tax deduction . But , I’d worked like as slave and for 12 years being in USA had no vacation or leaves )) Was busy making a millions for my BOSS )))

I was a bench jeweller for 17years ,done every thing in the trade.But the one thing i wish i,d done was –Something else!-
The pay is crap in relation to the skill required,the outlook for the trade is grim ,because of the rubbish that passes as jewellery ( not worth repairing V cost).SO now i,ve but away my tools work as a joiner and earn in 1 week what i,d earn as a jeweller in 1 month thinking of going down that route don’t.
get a job with long term prospects
