A lot of people are wondering, what is a super omega 3 fish oil? Should you pay extra for it? Is it safer? Does it have more health benefits? Unlike many manufacturers websites, I will try to be brief and to the point.

Excellent. What is the point?

I recently visited a national chain and went to their vitamin section. They had seven different fish oil supplements. They all had interesting names like "pure", "best" or "super omega3." The issue here is not the marketing people. There are worlds of difference between good and bad fish oil. However, using titles like super omega3 is useless information.

Omega 3 is a group of fatty acids that are derived mainly from cold water fatty fish. DHA and EPA are the two most important of these acids. All fish oil products have them as part of the formula. Why? Because they come from the fish. There are no species of "super" salmon or "extraordinary" sardines that make DHA or EPA any better.

However, there are differences in supplements.

Any quality product will be molecularly distilled - a process that separates the pollutants and toxins from the oils. It is amazing how many super omega3 supplements I have seen that do not use this process but claim they are pure because they use Norwegian or Alaskan Salmon. This might have been true 20 years ago but this claim no longer holds water [sorry].

Also, don't bother with farmed species. Instead of their natural food chain, they are fed pellets. As a result, they have very little omega anything.

As I mentioned before, a natural fat from one fish is the same as another. DHA is a 22 carbon chain bond with 6 double bonds. The chemistry does not change whether it is called super omega3 or not. What is important is how much of it your supplement has in it.

The recent research suggests a concentrated fish oil product should have more DHA than EPA - preferably twice as much. The body needs DHA for our brains, eyes, immune systems and heart. It can also use excess DHA much more easily.

Watch out for additives. One of the brands I found contained not one, but two, two types of crushed rock - talc and titanium dioxide (paint additive). Other brands had various other chemicals in them. Really, there is no need for anything other than the omega family and some natural vitamin E as a preservative.
