Koi are incredible fish, and people who keep them rarely give them up. Many say that they are addictive. Certainly, of all the pond fish there are, koi are the most fascinating. Koi are a type of carp that originated in Japan. In relatively recent years they have been developed by a process of selective breeding and now there are patterns and colors that can earn breeders a small fortune. For example:

· Ohgon is plain gold,

· Yamabuki Ohgon is a spectacular yellow-gold koi with metallic scales,

· Hariwake Ohgon is a metallic patterned fish with gold and silver that seems to shine out of the pond,

· Asagi is black with blue scales and it has a sort of netted look to it,

· Shiro Utsuri is black with white markings,

· Ki Utsuri is black with yellow markings,

· Hi Utsuri is balck with red markings,

· Kikusui is white with wavy orange patterns over its body,

· Tancho Kohaku has a white body with a single, but large red spot on its head,

· Kohaku is red and white, the background color being white - and ideally the red starting with a red spot on the fish's head, and ending with a spot just before the caudal fin (or tail),

· Taisho Sanke is also known as the Japanese tricolor koi, and it is a white fish with red and black patterns, preferably with a big red spot on the head, and

· Showa Sanke is a modern Japanese tricolor that is black with red and white markings on it.

The Germans have also selectively bred koi, but generally these are not as slim as the Japanese breeds. Patterns also vary.

When you buy your fish, you will pay a lot more for those that meet the color and pattern criteria perfectly than those that don't. But even koi that are not perfect in terms of patterns are still gorgeous.

When it comes to stocking a pond with koi, the most important factor to consider is how many fish you can accommodate. Koi can grow to about three feet in ideal conditions, but they need lots of water to swim in. When calculating the number of fish you can accommodate, allow at least 27 square feet for each fish, to allow for sufficient growth. Rather buy less fish if you aren't sure.

Make sure you have a pump and filter that is suited to the size of your koi pond, and feed them good quality pellets specially made for koi.

How much would this be worth (tricolor ring)?

my dad found a ring in a hotel, no one in lost&found claimed it so he got to keep it... its a tricolor(pink-gold, yellow-gold, and white-gold?) (3 rings) all 21karat....it weighs a few grams (havent checked) ,,, anyon eknow where i can find somewhere to check gold worth by weight,,,gold worth for all those colors?
