Carat Oval
Carat Oval
how do i measure the carat of an oval diamond?
When measuring diamonds, a "carat" is a unit of weight, not size. To determine the exact carat weight, you would have to take the diamond out of its setting, and diamond experts use very sensitive digital scales to measure weight.
However, you can get a good approximate carat weight by measuring your diamond with a millimeter ruler. A properly cut one carat round diamond will measure 6.5 millimeters in diameter at its widest edge (called the girdle). Oval diamonds and other fancy cuts are a little more tricky because they can carry more weight toward the bottom of the stone, depending on the cut.
One-half carat Oval = 5 by 3 millimeters
One carat Oval = 7 by 5 millimeters
Two carat Oval = 9 by 7 millimeters
Remember, you are measuring the girdle (the outermost edge) not the table (which is just the flat top of the stone).
A good quality one carat oval diamond (SI1 Clarity/G-H Color) has a current retail market value of about $3700.
If your oval diamond is 9 by 7 millimeters or larger, I would take it to a qualified gemologist to have a professional appraisal done. The page below will give you a link (#6) to find an appraiser in your area.
