I mean, a diamond is carbon (coal). Why should I spend a bunch of money on something I can find in my stocking for free? Please tell my why black diamonds are valuable. And, even though they are pricey, they still aren't as expensive as clear (white) diamonds. What gives?
by your definition a lot of things are made of carbon... it is the most abundant atom on the planet so its not exactly correct to say that coal and diamond is the same thing. When i am diamond is made there has to be extreme amount of pressure which change its molecule structure from coal to diamond..
so to answer your question a black diamond is not polished coal technically and they are so expensive because they are rare and they are in demand while supply is relatively low...
they aren't as expensive as clear diamonds because they are no where near as popular so again it comes down to supply and demand.
Also black diamonds are more porous then clear diamonds
and just if your interested they don't really know why black diamonds occur they think its something to do with carbon and its isotopes combined with nitrogen while the diamond is formed but there is still debate...
